Mr A is a South African cricketer who believes his ex-wife is having an affair with a married tabloid journalist, Dominic Culpepper, which explains a number of negative stories about the cricketer’s past appearing in the paper (Ch 7). Mr A has hired the agency to follow his ex-wife, Mrs A, in order to prove this theory.
Strike has nicknamed the cricketer ‘Arsehole’ but Pat thinks they should use ‘Mr A’ (Ch 7).
Mrs A is a brunette who spends a lot of her time shopping. Robin watches her shop in Balenciaga in Belgravia and Strike joins her in order to discuss the Decima Mullins case. When Mrs A comes out of the store they both follow her. She then enters a jeweller’s but reemerges quickly. Robin thinks she is Christmas shopping (Ch 13).
Strike and Kim Cochrane later infiltrate a gala dinner at the Dorchester which Mrs A is attending, which results in a conclusion to the case (Ch 16).
