Qing is the young daughter of Lin Doherty and Will Edensor. She is around two years old and her ‘white hair hadn’t been shaved like that of the other children, but stood out around her head like a dandelion clock’. She lives in the children’s dormitory on Chapman Farm (Ch 31).
Robin overhears Lin and Will talking about ‘Qing’ in the woods one night and when Robin sees Will Edensor comforting the little girl, and then sees Lin cuddling her, she draws the conclusion that she is their daughter.
Robin sees Lin again working with Will on the vegetable patch and sees that both ‘Will and Lin were trying to sustain a parental relationship with Qing in defiance of the Church’s teaching’ (Ch 50).
