Deirdre Doherty

Whilst Kevin Pirbright was at Chapman Farm, another family consisting of Deirdre Doherty, her husband Ralph, and their three children also moved there. Kevin said that Deirdre got pregnant again whilst at the farm and gave birth to a daughter whom Mazu named Lin (Ch 7).

Kevin said he was twelve when they were summoned into the Temple at the Farm by Wace and told that Ralph Doherty, Deirdre’s husband, had left in the middle of the night taking the three eldest children with him. Deirdre had stayed behind with Lin (Ch 7).

A few months later, Kevin said they were told Deirdre had been expelled from the church and had left Lin behind. He later overheard adults whispering that Deirdre had been expelled as she had written in her journal that Jonathan Wace had raped her (Ch 7).

Robin and Strike try to locate Deirdre but can find no sign of her (Ch 15).

They manage to trace Deirdre’s daughter Niamh who shows Strike and Robin a faded polaroid of Deirdre which looked like it had been taken in the early 90’s. She is described as fair haired and wearing a pair of square framed glasses (Ch 21).

Strike tells Robin that he thinks that Deirdre could be the pregnant woman that Henry Worthington-Fields saw collapsing in the field at Chapman Farm during his week there. Robin agrees it’s possible that Deirdre could be dead and that Lin may be Wace’s daughter (Ch 22).
