Dev Shah calls Strike to say he’s followed Seb Montgomery to Opium in Chinatown.  

Opium is a Shanghai-themed “secret” bar and dim sum parlour found behind this jade-coloured door on Gerrard Street. 

Strike joins Shah, unimpressed with the fact that Montgomery has chosen to sit on the third floor of the restaurant, which involves Strike having to haul himself up lots of stairs. He sits down opposite Dev in a side room, a short distance away from Montgomery’s group, and they discuss putting Jago Ross under surveillance. 

Seb is with friends “sitting on steel-legged stools around a wooden table where a bartender was mixing cocktails in front of them.” The exposed brick and bare floorboards remind Strike of the bars he has been to with Madeline. (The Ink Black Heart, Chapter 27)

Opium has three separate bars of varying sizes over two floors, and an extensive dim sum and cocktail menu.
