Bexleyheath, a town in South East London, is where two suspects in an agency side-case, men dubbed by Sam Barclay the Frankenstein Brothers, or the Franks, live on the fourth floor of a block of flats.
Strike, Robin, Sam Barclay, Dev Shah, Michelle Greenstreet and Clive Littlejohn all keep the Frank brothers’ home, approximately thirteen miles from the Denmark Street office, under surveillance during the course of the book.
On one occasion Robin follows the Franks to Bexleyheath train station, from where they travel to Waterloo East station.
“Robin, who was wearing a beanie hat to cover her distinctive new haircut, followed Frank One on foot to Bexleyheath station and, after a short wait, got into the train compartment, where she kept him under covert observation from several seats away” (Ch 13).
During Strike’s surveillance of the flats occupied by the Frank Brothers, he follows them to a bus stop where they board the number 301 bus.
“They ascended to the upper deck while Strike remained on the lower …” (Ch 32)
Following the 301 bus route we can make an approximate guess as to where the Franks’ block of flats is located; perhaps Hurst Lane in Bexleyheath.
The Franks disembark the bus at Beresford Square in Woolwich.
Beresford Square is a partly pedestrianised market square in the centre of the town dividing the traditional shopping centre and the, now closed, Arsenal. Buildings in and around the area date back to its development in the early 1800s, and it is now designated a conservation area.
Strike follows the Franks into Sports Direct and watches them acting suspiciously.
