Dubbed as an ‘all-new, globe-trotting adventure’, the third film to the five-part Fantastic Beasts series is due to be released on April 8, 2022. We’ve decided to gather the information we know (so far) and share it among the eager fans of the series.
Title
It was recently announced that the title for the third film is Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore!
Premise
There is no revealed official synopsis of the third film, but it is known that the story will take place several years since the events of Crimes of Grindewald, so that would be around the 1930s. It is known that more will be revealed about the Dumbledore family and that the story will lead up to the Wizarding community’s involvement in World War II, with the final movie ending in 1945, the year of the famous wizard duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
“I can say I read the script and the character development is really lovely and it’s very similar to the feel of the first movie, which I think is great. It’s leading toward this massive war with the backdrop of World War II, so you can just imagine epic battle scenes are coming.”
Dan Fogelr SyFy interview
The film will feature new locations such as Berlin, Germany, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“Turning up at Leavesden and shooting on this rebuild — I mean, they created four large intersections in Berlin with trams and cars and hundreds of extras and shops that if you go into you’re surprised there’s no-one actually in there serving you. The detail in all the shop fronts and all … this is huge and beautiful.”
Jude Law, DP/30 episode
An Asian location is also rumoured to be featured, possibly China.
J.K. Rowling has talked of her research into Chinese mythical beasts and the involvement of one in the third film.
“In the movie [Crimes of Grindelwald] I included a Chinese creature. I’ve been immersed in a bestiary from China – mythical creatures and so on with their various properties. So, I can’t say too much now, but I’m using something from China in the next movie as well. So, at the moment my head is full of Chinese mythical creatures.“
Below are some set photos from the film, credit to the Daily Mail, confirmed as being for Fantastic Beasts 3 by Maura Leamy.
Filming was also spotted in Smithfield Market, London, on Valentine’s weekend, 2021.
Production
Majority of the cast and crew returned to Leavesden studios, along with new ones. Director David Yates is still at the helm, while Steve Kloves joined J.K. Rowling as the screenwriters of the third instalment. James Newton Howard stayed on as the film composer, while George Richmond took over Philippe Rousselot as the cinematographer.
Secrets of Dumbledore will feature the usual ensemble cast of Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Jude Law (Albus Dumbledore), Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein), Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski), Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein), Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone), Callum Turner (Theseus Scamander), William Nadylam (Yusuf Kama), Poppy Corby-Tuech (Vinda Rosier), Jessica Williams (Professor Eulalie Hicks), Victoria Yeates (Bunty), and Kevin Guthrie (Abernathy).
Jessica Williams, as we all know had a short cameo in the previous film, is set to have a bigger role in the third film. She is portraying Professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks, a teacher at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in America.
J.K. Rowling spent a joint birthday with Williams in July 2017 and it seems they are now good friends.
While there are the returning cast members, we will also be seeing some ‘new’ faces. Among them is Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royale), who will now take over the role of Gellert Grindelwald – a character previously portrayed by Johnny Depp.
The new cast also includes Richard Coyle (Netflix’s Sabrina), Oliver Masucci (Netflix’s Dark), Dave Wong and Alexander Kuznetsov. These actors have yet to be formally announced. Brazilian actress Maria Fernanda Candido is also rumoured to be part of the cast.
In a Collider interview, Katherine Waterston said that she and Mads Mikkelsen “don’t have anything together in the film,” meaning it is unlikely Tina Goldstein and Grindelwald will have any scenes together in Fantastic Beasts 3. However, after the events of Crimes of Grindelwald, we can assume Queenie (Alison Sudol) will. In an interview, Dan Fogler also said he has scenes with Grindelwald in the movie.
Production was originally scheduled to start back in March 2020 but because of the lockdown caused by the ongoing pandemic, it was pushed back to September 2020. As of this post, the filming is completed and it is in post-production. Now we’re just waiting for the first trailer!
