Nightjar is a speakeasy cocktail bar on City Road, Shoreditch, London. The bar is known for its discreet location, live jazz music, and its wide variety of cocktails.
On arrival for his sixth date with Madeleine Courson-Miles, Strike walks past the discreet entrance and has to double back.
He gives his name at the door and proceeds downstairs into the dimly lit basement bar of “dark wood and exposed brick.”
Madeleine is, as usual, late to arrive, so Strike spends twenty minutes perusing the lengthy menu showing extravagant concoctions.
When she finally arrives, Madeleine orders an Orca Punch.
Strike orders a Toronto.
With the Toronto, you break off bits of candy floss and add it to the cocktail to make it as sweet as you like.
Madeleine asks Strike if he would be alright with Charlotte Campbell modelling for her, and he gives the go-ahead.
While Strike and Madeline are chatting, a jazz quartet plays.
After Nightjar, Strike and Madeleine go back to her house in Eccleston Square Mews in Pimlico.
