Trebah Garden

Trebah Garden is a tropical garden in Cornwall. In Career of Evil, waking up in Elin’s beautiful flat, Strike recalls Trebah Garden as being one of the most beautiful places he had visited in his life.

Strike likely visited Trebah Garden with his Uncle Ted and Aunt Joan during his time in Cornwall as a child.

It was a lovely surprise to us that the gardens lead to a small beach at the bottom of the valley. We bought an ice cream from the small shop and enjoyed the warm March sunshine.

Strike recalls the beauty of Gunnera Passage, which is a narrow path from one side of the valley to the other. Since we visited in March, Gunnera Passage was a bit disappointing. You’d need to visit in the height of summer to experience it at its best, when the plants are fully grown.

In the book, Gunnera Passage is described as an “emerald-and-shadow world”.
