The Running Grave Story Timeline

Warning: spoilers for The Running Grave!

The events in The Running Grave take place between February 2016 and September 2016.

Sunday, 21 February: Strike and Robin attend the christening of Nick and Ilsa’s son, Benjamin Herbert. Strike returns to his attic flat and cooks broccoli and salmon fillet. (Chapters 1-3)

Tuesday, 23 February: Strike and Robin meet Colin, James and Edward at The Reform Club. They then go for a drink and a chat in The Golden Lion. Strike stays in the pub and reads emails from Kevin to Colin and discovers that the UHC was the Aymerton Community. (Chapters 4-7)

Thursday, 25 February: Strike calls Robin from the office. Robin has a haircut. Strike spends three hours trying to track down Angel’s father for Shanker. Strike meets Wardle for a curry at the Cinnamon Club and asks for census records for Chapman Farm and information of Kevin Pirbright’s murder. Robin and Ryan go to the Duke of York Theatre. (Chapter 8)

Friday, 26 February: Strike tails Bigfoot until 5pm. Strike and Robin go to Prudence’s house in Strawberry Hill in the evening so that Robin can take some of her clothes for the undercover job. (Chapter 9)

Saturday, 27 February: Strike spends the evening reading Combating Cult Mind Control.

Sunday, 28 February: Strike spends evening reading Combating Cult Mind Control.

Friday, 18 March: Strike quizzes Robin on her Rowena Ellis pseudonym. (Chapter 10)

Saturday, 19 March: Robin attends the first UHC meeting at Rupert Court Temple. It’s the Day of the Wounded Prophet. Holi. Strike goes to Hamley’s to buy his nephews gifts (Air Storm Firetek Bows). Robin calls Strike from a café a few blocks from Rupert Court. Strike goes to Lucy’s to tell her about the UHC case and he stays for lunch. Strike returns to his attic flat and thinks about Leda and Charlotte. Strike calls Robin and asks her to interview Sheila Kennet which she agrees to do the week after next. Ryan goes to Robin’s for dinner. Bijou calls Strike and he agrees to go to dinner with her. (Chapters 10-12)

Wednesday, 23 March: Midge travels to California for a holiday; Robin covers for her. Robin and Barclay watch the block of flats in Bexleyheath where the Frank brothers live. Robin follows Frank One to Piccadilly Circus to a comic-book store. She noticed UHC members, including Will, heading into Berwick Street. (Chapter 13) Strike interviews Fergus Robertson at the Westminster Arms. (Chapter 14)

Friday, 25 March: Charlotte says she was diagnosed with cancer on this day.

Saturday, 26 March: Robin goes to another UHC meeting at Rupert Court and is approached again by the blonde member. Becca Pirbright and Noli Seymour are there.

Sunday, 27 March: Easter Sunday

Monday, 28 March: Easter Monday. Storm Katie hits Britain. Robin arrives at the office and talks to Strike. Pat is off work. Littlejohn comes to the office, though no one is supposed to be there. Ryan calls Robin. Strike accepts another date with Bijou (Chapter 15).

Tuesday, 29 March: Strike and Robin communicate only by matter-of-fact texts (Chapter 16).

Wednesday, 30 March: Robin and Ryan have their first big argument in a bar near Piccadilly Circus (Chapter 16). Midge returns from California.

Thursday, 31 March: Robin sets off for Coventry at 5am to interview Sheila Kennet at midday. She stops at Newport Pagnell service station on the way and talks to Ilsa on the phone about Strike and Bijou. After her interview with Sheila, Robin gets a tuna sandwich from a nearby café and sits in the Land Rover to call Strike, who is watching the Frank brothers’ flat. Strike interviews Henry Worthington-Fields, Flora’s friend, at 6pm. Charlotte arrives at The Grenadier to talk to Strike after his interview with Henry. She tells him she has cancer (Chapter 16-18).

Friday, 1 April: Robin and Ryan meet up and have sex (the worst April Fools joke ever).

Saturday, 2 April: Robin goes to Rupert Court Temple for another UHC talk. Taio Wace gives a speech. (Chapter 19)

Wednesday, 6 April: In the morning, the agency has a meeting regarding Robin going undercover at Chapman Farm. Barclay takes over surveillance on Frank One from Littlejohn. Midge relieves Dev of his surveillance on Bigfoot. At night, Dev drives up to Chapman Farm to put the fake rock in place. (Chapter 20)

Thursday, 7 April: Strike and Robin go to Chalfont St Giles to talk to Niamh Doherty. They wait in the car beforehand and Abigail Glover calls Strike. After the interview with Niamh, Strike and Robin go to Merlin’s Cave. (Chapters 21-22)

Friday, 8 April: Robin goes to Victoria Station to get the minibus to Chapman Farm at 10am (Chapter 23). Robin arrives at Chapman Farm and is made to stuff turtles. She talks to Louise Pirbright (Chapter 24).

Strike walks down Sloane Avenue to the Chelsea Cloisters hotel to take over from Dev on surveillance of Bigfoot. Dev tells Strike that Littlejohn worked at Patterson Inc. Bijou texts Strike. Strike tails Bigfoot in Sloane Square. Abigail Glover calls Strike back and agrees to meet on Sunday at 7pm in The Forester. (Chapter 25)

Robin helps groom the horses at the farm. The new recruits have their first meditation session in the Temple with Mazu Wace. (Chapter 26) 

Saturday, 9 April: Strike spends the afternoon at Lucy’s; Uncle Ted is staying over. In the evening, Strike makes an omelette and gets another text from Bijou. (Chapter 28)

Sunday, 10 April: Strike is on surveillance until 4pm when Midge takes over. At 7pm, Strike meets Abigail Glover at the Forester in Ealing (Chapter 28). Strike does some grocery shopping then returns to the office. He works on the computer at Pat’s desk. He looks up articles about Daiyu Wace’s death. He finds Torment Town’s drawings (Chapter 29).

Monday, 11 April: In the morning, Strike leaves a voicemail for Colonel Edward Graves, father of Alexander Graves (Chapter 32).

Tuesday, 12 April: Robin is woken at 5am by the ringing of the large copper bell. The groups are reconfigured and she feeds the pigs and puts down fresh straw in the chickens’ nesting boxes. She attends a third lecture, given by Taio Wace. She attends a chanting session, and then a crafting workshop in which Mazu reads passages about the Golden Prophet from The Answer by Jonathan Wace. Robin is escorted by Jiang to Dr Andy Zou for a check-up to see if she’s all right to fast. On the way, Jiang shouts at Will for helping a toddler. After seeing Dr Zou, Jiang takes Robin to dinner. On the way, she places the fourth pebble in her dormitory (Chapter 30-31).

Wednesday, 13 April: Littlejohn returns to work. At 9am, Strike texts him saying he wants a face-to-face talk at one o’clock at the office after they’ve both finished with their surveillance. Barclay calls to say both the Frank brothers are stalking Tasha Mayo, so they have to double the manpower on the case. Strike decides to call Littlejohn and confront him about working for Patterson Inc over the phone instead. Strike watches the Frank brothers’ flat. Colonel Graves calls Strike and they arrange to meet the following Tuesday. Strike follows the Frank brothers, who are wearing wigs, on the bus to Beresford Square in Woolwich where they buy rope and a mallet. He then follows them to McDonald’s. Jordan Reaney calls Strike. Strike calls Shanker and they arrange to meet up in an East End cafe (Chapter 32).

Midge takes over surveillance of the Franks, and Strike takes the Tube to Bethnal Green. He receives another text from Bijou, which he ignores. Strike arrives at Pillecci’s to meet Shanker and reads the Daily Mail before Shanker arrives. He reads about Charlotte and Landon Dormer on page 5. Strike talks to Shanker about Jordan Reaney. Lucy calls Strike about Ted’s GP appointment (Chapter 33).

In the morning, Robin attends a group session with Mazu Wace. In the evening, the 24-hour fast begins.

Thursday, 14 April: The new recruits’ last retreat day. They fast on hot water with lemon. The recruits are led into the farmhouse basement where Wace gives a speech. Robin talks to Wace. He leads them to the Temple. Robin joins the UHC and there’s a party. Robin escapes her dormitory to find the fake rock for the first time. She overhears Lin and Will talking. Robin reads Strike’s note (Chapters 34-36).

Friday, 15 April: In the early hours, Dev Shah collects Robin’s letter revealing Will Edensor has a child. Robin fakes a slip-and-fall in the chicken coop to disguise her dirty tracksuits from the night before. Strike does surveillance on Bigfoot. (Chapter 37)

Tuesday, 19 April: Strike drives to Norfolk to interview the Graves family (Chapters 37-38). Robin and other members are taken to the basement of the farmhouse and are given the task of writing a letter to a family member (Chapter 39).

Thursday, 21 April: Strike gets the train and ferry to St Mawes. At night, Robin goes to the fake rock and writes another letter. (Chapter 40)

Friday, 22 April: Strike takes Ted for a GP appointment at 10am. He calls Lucy to tell her that Ted has dementia. Midge sends Strike a scanned copy of Robin’s letter. Strike searches for Cherie Gittins online (Chapter 40).

Saturday, 23 April to Wednesday, 27 April: Robin notices Will and Lin’s attempts to be around Qing. She notices animosity between the Pirbright sisters and Louise (Chapter 41).

Thursday, 28 April: Robin goes to the fake rock for the third time and finds a note from Strike and one from Ryan, and a Cadbury’s bar she devours in a few bites (Chapter 41). Robin is returning to her dorm when she hears a search party looking for Bo. She hides in an old barn and finds the old Polaroid photos in a biscuit tin. The two women on child care duty are punished for letting Bo escape (Chapter 42).

Wednesday, 4 May: It’s 6 days after Robin finds the Polaroids. Strike and the rest of the agency (bar Littlejohn, who is on the Franks) have a team meeting in the basement room of The Flying Horse. Dev shows Strike the Private Eye article about Honbold which mentions Strike (Chapter 43). Strike waits outside Lavington Court Chambers for Bijou. Shanker calls him to say he’s in with Reaney on 28 May. Strike confronts Bijou in The Ship in Lincoln’s Inn then gets the Tube from Holborn station (Chapter 44).

Thursday, 5 May: Strike interviews one of Wardle’s mates for a job, but he goes with Patterson instead. On Robin’s fourth trip to the woods, she places the Polaroids in the fake rock. (Chapter 45)

Friday, 6 May: Robin spends the day in lectures and chanting. Scarlet tracksuits are left on their beds in the dormitory that evening; they are entering the Season of the Stolen Prophet. Robin and Penny Brown remove their hair dye in the bathroom. Robin learns about Jacob from Penny. After commenting on the hypocrisy of Mazu’s black hair, Penny escapes into a cubicle (Chapter 45).

Monday, 9 May: Frank One takes a stroll over to Tasha Mayo’s house. Midge follows him.

Thursday, 12 May: Strike talks on the phone with Uncle Ted. Robin goes to the fake rock for the fifth time to find two Cadbury Flakes and another letter from Strike. She writes a letter back to Strike (Chapter 46).

Friday, 13 May: Strike writes an interim report for Sir Colin Edensor and reads Robin’s letter. Strike gets a call from Tasha saying a snake has been posted through her door. Strike calls Barclay. He then gets a call from Charlotte Campbell (Chapter 47).

Sunday, 16 May: Abigail threatens Barry in the Grosvenor pub. (Chapter 49)

Tuesday, 17 May: Shortly after midday, Strike exits Sloane Square Tube station to take over surveillance on Bigfoot. Strike meets Dev Shah (who’s been punched by Bigfoot) in the Rose and Crown. Dev has a photo of Bigfoot and a naked girl, which puts an end to the case. Strike returns to the office where he calls Bigfoot’s wife and a new client who wants his mother watched. Pat emails the new client the contract. Strike continues his search for Cherie Gittins on Facebook and Mumsnet and finds her private Facebook account under the name Carrie Curtis Woods. Barry ‘Baz’ Saxon comes to the office to talk to Strike. Strike then calls Ryan Murphy (Chapters 48-49).

Unknown date: Robin attends a two hour lecture on spirit bonding.

Wednesday, 18 May: Robin goes to the rock but believes she’s a day early and finds no note from Strike. She leaves a note anyway.

Thursday, 19 May: Robin is told to go and work in the vegetable patch. She works with Will, who is also looking after Qing. Robin struggles to sleep at night, with thoughts of the Retreat Rooms (Chapter 50).

Unknown date: Strike meets Ryan in St Stephen’s Tavern. Ryan hands Strike the file on the Aylmerton Community case. (Chapter 51)

Tuesday, 24 May: It is five days after Robin was demoted from the high-level group and worked in the vegetable patch. Robin cleans out the Shire horses’ stable. Robin interferes with a fight between Emily and Jiang. Shawna takes Robin to work in Class One (Chapter 52). Mazu takes Robin out of the classroom and gets her to kiss her foot. Robin has her Revelation session. Taio takes Robin to a Retreat Room, passing Giles Harmon and Lin. Taio tells Robin to clean the three Retreat Rooms (Chapters 53-54).

Thursday, 26 May: Robin puts another letter in the fake rock for Strike. Midge retrieves the letter overnight.

Friday, 27 May: Strike reads Robin’s note and is concerned. Midge leaves for surveillance on the Franks. Strike calls Lucas Messenger back. Strike listens to Charlotte’s messages. Littlejohn arrives at the office and tells Strike he thinks he’s being followed. Strike spends time in his office doing some online investigation (Chapter 55).

Saturday, 28 May: Strike goes to HMP Bedford to interview Jordan Reaney (Chapter 56).

Thursday, 2 June: Robin retrieves Strike’s letter that tells her Colin Edensor is happy to give £1000 for her to donate to the church (Chapter 57).

Friday, 3 June: Robin visits Mazu in her office to offer a donation to the UHC (Chapter 57).

A few days after Robin offers to donate to the church, she is promoted to the higher-level group again.

Thursday, 9 June: Robin leaves another letter for Strike.

Saturday, 11 June: Robin attends a crafting session led by Becca Pirbiright. Becca reads some of The Answer out to the group. Robin overhears an argument between Becca and Emily (Chapter 58).

Tuesday, 14 June: Charlotte is arrested for assault on Landon Dormer (Chapter 59).

Wednesday, 15 June: The Stolen Prophet’s Manifestation. Wan goes into Labour and Robin is present for the birth.

Thursday, 16 June: Dev Shah checks the fake rock and finds no letter from Robin. (Chapter 60) Strike tells Tasha over the phone to change her routine because the Franks may be planning a kidnapping (Chapter 59).

Friday, 17 June: The next day, Strike sits in the Connaught Hotel restaurant to watch their newest client’s mother. He reads an article on Charlotte’s arrest after assaulting Landon Dormer. Leonard Heaton calls Strike and they arrange a time and date to meet (Chapter 59). Robin goes to the fake rock again. She finds two Yorkie bars in there and letters from Strike, Murphy and Shah. Robin writes a long letter to Strike. She encounters Lin in the woods (Chapter 60).

Saturday, 18 June: Strike reads Robin’s letter. (Chapter 61)

Thursday, 23 June: Strike watches the younger Frank brother in Bexleyheath. In the evening, Strike deals with some tedious paperwork. It’s the day of the Brexit referendum, but he doesn’t have time to vote. Strike deletes three voicemails from Charlotte before heading up to his attic flat (Chapter 61). Charlotte Campbell commits suicide.

Friday, 24 June: Strike learns from the car radio on the way to Cromer that Britain has decided to leave the EU. He interviews the Heatons in their house on Garden Street (Chapter 62). Strike walks along the promenade, books a hotel room in the Hotel de Paris and goes to the King’s Head pub for a burger and chips and Doom Bar. In the hotel, his thoughts drift to Charlotte and Robin (Chapter 63).

Saturday, 25 June: Strike wakes up in the Hotel de Paris to find seven texts. He finds out that Charlotte Campbell has committed suicide. He drives to St John the Baptist and sits in a pew (right hand side, third row from the back) (Chapter 64).

Thursday, 30 June: The UHC enters the Season of the Drowned Prophet, so they wear white tracksuits.

Robin joins the group in Norwich to collect money for the church (Chapter 65). Emily Pirbright goes missing, and Robin finds her in a toy shop in the shopping arcade (Chapter 66). Robin reads Strike’s note saying he’s interviewed the Heatons. Robin leaves another letter for Strike.

Monday, 4 July: In the evening, Strike takes Robin’s letter with him to reread on night surveillance on the Franks. Strike follows the Franks to a lock-up facility in Croydon (Chapter 67). 

Tuesday, 5 July: Dev Shah arrives at 8am to take over from surveillance on the Franks. Dev shows Strike a photo of the woman who had approached Strike in the Connaught; he’d taken the photo of her standing on the corner of Denmark Street the previous afternoon. Back at the office, Strike FaceTimes Jacob Messenger (Chapter 67).

Thursday, 7 July: Robin writes a short letter to Strike.

Friday, 8 July: Jonathan Wace returns to Chapman Farm (Chapter 68).

Saturday, 9 July: Jonathan and Mazu arrive at the dinner hall at breakfast, which is unusual. Robin pretends to help look for Daiyu’s fish pendant and heads for the woods. Jiang finds Robin in the woods and they walk back together. Robin finds the fish pendants under her mattress and throws it out of the bathroom window into the grass. Robin joins Jiang to help look for the fish in the craft rooms and library (Chapter 69).

Unknown date: Strike is following Toy Boy and the client’s mother into Selfridges when Shanker calls to say Jordan Reaney tried to kill himself. Strike spends four and a half hours trailing around Selfridges after the targets. Barclay takes over at 3pm. Strike meets Bijou in the Flying Horse. Pat arrives at the pub to talk to Strike about something face-to-face. Strike finishes his burger and chips and calls Shanker to try and get the phone call to Reaney traced (Chapter 70).

Thursday, 14 July: Robin writes a letter to Strike and tells him about the fish pendant business. (Chapter 71)

Tuesday, 19 July: Robin helps Will in the kitchen and Noli Seymour joins them (Chapter 71). Lin miscarries in the bathroom (Chapter 72). Robin goes to see Papa J and has dinner with him. He gropes her and Mazu and Becca walk in. Afterwards, Robin runs to the dormitory bathroom and throws up in a toilet (Chapter 73).

Thursday, 21 July: (“Two days passed” since Robin’s talk with Papa J and Lin’s miscarriage). Robin writes a letter to Strike. She debates whether to leave or stay, and decides to stay. She eats the Double Decker the agency left her. She sees Barclay arrive to collect the letter (Chapter 74).

Friday, 22 July: Strike reads Robin’s letter. He decides she needs to come out. Strike confronts Littlejohn. Sam Barclay is on Frank Two. Strike tells Midge that he’s taking her off the Mayo case (Chapter 75).

Robin helps decorate the Temple for the Manifestation of the Drowned Prophet in a week’s time. (Chapter 76)

Tuesday, 26 July: Robin is sent to work in the laundry. Marion accuses Robin of lying about being a spirit wife of Papa J. Robin asks Will to spirit bond and they go to a Retreat Room. She tells him his mother has died and he hits her. Amandeep takes Will and Robin back to the laundry where they work for a further three hours. She witnesses the women climbing the temple steps to begin the 3 day countdown to the Manifestation (Chapter 76-77).

Wednesday, 27 July: Strike wakes buoyed by the idea he’d be picking up Robin the following evening. Lucy calls at 6:30am to say Ted has gone missing. Strike meets with Andrew Honbold at 9am. Lucy calls to say Ted was found on the beach (Chapter 78). Strike returns to the office. Littlejohn has dropped off the recording of Kevin Pirbright. Pat shows Strike Carrie Curtis Woods’ Facebook page. Strike listens to the recording of Kevin (Chapter 79).

Thursday, 28 July: Shah departs for Norfolk at midday. Strike goes to Lucy’s in the evening and they discuss what they’re going to do about Ted (Chapter 80).

Friday, 29 July: Strike wakes up at 6am and sets off to Gloucestershire. Tasha calls Strike, then he calls Midge to put her back on the Mayo case. Shah rings Strike to say the fake rock is gone. Strike turns round and heads to Norfolk (Chapter 80). Strike arrives in Lion’s Mouth at 1pm.

It’s the day of the Manifestation of the Drowned Prophet. The UHC members fast. Robin feeds the chickens, cleans the dorms, and spends a few hours in the craft room. The members are led barefoot into the temple and they chant. Daiyu appears. Robin drowns (Chapter 81). Robin wakes and is taken to the basement and put in the box (Chapter 82).

At nearly midnight, Midge calls Strike, who is sitting in the BMW in Lion’s Mouth. Barclay watches Tasha’s house (Chapter 83).

Saturday, 30 July: Strike sits in the BMW all night in Lion’s Mouth.

Robin spends 8 hours in the box. The Season of the Healer Prophet begins. Robin is tasked with looking after Jacob (Chapter 84).

Strike checks himself into a guest cabin at Felbrigg Lodge Hotel. Barclay calls him, and then Shanker calls him with the area code of the phone call to Reaney (Chapter 85).

Robin looks after Jacob all day. She reads the newspapers on the floor. Emily comes and takes over from Robin. Robin questions her before going with Jiang (Chapter 86). Robin escapes the farm (Chapter 87). Strike takes Robin back to Felbrigg Lodge. He updates her on the agency so she doesn’t have to talk about her experience yet. The police arrive and Strike wakes her up (Chapter 88). The police interview Robin for 80 minutes. Robin showers and then she tells Strike about the last 10 days. Strike gets in bed with her and they hold hands for five minutes (Chapter 89).

Thursday, 4 August: Lucy goes with Ted to see a specialist. Lucy calls Strike to say the specialist says that Ted shouldn’t be living alone any more. Strike meets Colin Edensor in Rules restaurant to update him about the case. Strike returns to Denmark Street (Chapter 90).

Robin sends her parents out to Waitrose. She works on her laptop. Strike calls Robin and she leaves her flat to talk to him, away from her parents (Chapter 91). Robin returns to her flat. Linda tells her that Jenny is pregnant again and that Martin’s girlfriend is also pregnant. Two police officers come to Robin’s flat and take her to the station (Chapter 92). Strike follows the Franks from their flat after seeing them enter the van holding balaclavas. He calls Midge to warn her they may be planning the kidnapping that night. He calls Barclay to tell him to go to Notting Hill. Fergus Robertson calls Strike to tell him his Wikipedia page has tripled in length. Prudence calls Strike and accuses him of contacting her client. Strike, Barclay and Midge catch the Franks trying to kidnap Tasha Mayo. Michael Ellacott calls Strike to tell him Robin is being questioned by the police (Chapter 93). Strike meets Robin and her parents outside the police station. Robin sends her parents back to her flat in a cab. Strike and Robin go for a drink in a nearby pub so she can update him (Chapter 94).

Sunday, 7 August: To her relief, Robin’s parents leave for Yorkshire at midday. Robin finishes her report on Chapman Farm for Strike. Ryan returns from Spain and goes straight to Robin’s flat (Chapter 95).

Monday, 8 August: Ryan leaves Robin’s flat at 6am for work. Robin picks Strike up in the Land Rover from Wembley station. Nicolas Delauney calls Strike and calls him a monkey. Robin realises what happened to Diedre Doherty and pulls up on the hard shoulder. Strike speaks to Abigail on the phone. Strike and Robin sit in silence for half an hour after an argument. Robin apologises to Strike to break the ice (Chapter 95). Strike and Robin arrive in Thornbury to find the house empty. They go to the Malthouse pub. They find out Mitch Patterson has been arrested. Strike sacks Littlejohn over the phone (Chapter 96). Strike and Robin interview Carrie Curtis Woods (Chapter 97). Strike and Robin buy food from a shop on the High Street then park up by the church on Greenhill Road to eat and chat (Chapter 98). Robin arrives at Murphy’s flat in Wanstead at ten past 8. He shows her the interview recording of Becca accusing her of child abuse. Robin calls Strike (Chapter 99). Strike eats in Chinatown. Robin calls him as he is walking back to Denmark Street. Strike watches the CCTV footage of an intruder at the office who has a gun. Nathan Woods calls Strike and shouts at him down the phone. A police officer informs Strike that Carrie has hung herself (Chapter 100).

Tuesday, 9 August: Strike and Robin are questioned separately by the police about their talk with Carrie. They don’t see much of each other for 24 hours. Strike gives Robin the task of contacting Walter and Marion’s children while at home. Strike deals with their new client, a wife suspecting her husband of infidelity. The husband takes a detour, followed by Strike, to Hampstead Heath after dark.

Wednesday, 10 August: Strike gets a phone call to say the Franks are being charged with stalking and attempted kidnap. Strike holds a team meeting (bar Shah, who is in Norwich) in the Flying Horse. A locksmith fits a skeleton-key-proof lock in the street door to the office. Midge suggests getting Tasha to go undercover at Zhou’s clinic (Chapter 101). Strike and Robin go to Bar Italia for coffee and a chat. Pat calls Strike to say Will Edensor has turned up at the office (Chapter 102). Strike and Robin talk to Will. Pat fetches them pizza and looks after Qing. Pat offers to take Will and Qing to her house (Chapter 103).

Thursday, 11 August: Strike and Robin meet Colin at his home in Thames Ditton. They are followed on the way (Chapter 104). Strike and Robin talk to Colin, James and Edward (Chapter 105). Robin buys a new t-shirt and meets Prudence in Il Portico (Chapter 106). At the office, Strike eats his second Chinese meal in two weeks. Midge tells Strike over the phone that Tasha thinks she knows where Lin is being kept. Robin calls Strike to tell him about her meeting with Prudence. Amelia Crichton calls Strike wanting to meet up with him (Chapter 107).

Friday, 12 August: Robin interviews Rufus Fernsby at his office café at lunchtime (Chapter 108). Robin goes to Strike, who is in his BMW on surveillance of Hampstead in Dorset Street, and tells him about her interview with Rufus. Strike and Robin argue (Chapter 109). Strike goes to the SUPERSERVICE with Papa J at Olympia and listens to Wace speak (Chapter 110). Robin is at the office, worrying about Strike. Prudence calls Robin saying Flora would like to meet Will. Robin notices a figure watching the office on Denmark Street and decides to stay in the office and not order a takeaway pizza (Chapter 111). Strike talks to Jonathan Wace in the presence of the Principles of the UHC (Chapter 112).

Saturday, 13 August: Robin wakes up in the office to Strike’s surprise. They chat about the case (Chapter 113). Strike and Robin go to Pat’s house in Kilburn at 10am to talk to Will. Midge calls Strike to tell him that Tasha has seen Lin in Zhou’s clinic (Chapter 114). Ryan goes to Robin’s flat and they have a Chinese takeaway. Robin and Ryan argue (Chapter 115). Lucy calls Strike to say Ted had had a funny turn. Strike abandons his surveillance on Hampstead and drives to Lucy’s.

Monday, 15 August: Strike spends most of the day on surveillance of Toy Boy before handing over to Barclay in the late afternoon and heading back to the office at 4pm. Strike and Robin talk in the office. Midge rings to say Tasha was spotted and has lost the note to Lin. Strike calls Wardle. Lucy calls to tell Strike that Ted has had a mini stroke and that he’s going for a scan on Friday (Chapter 116). Strike and Robin take Will to see Prudence and Flora. Strike waits in the sitting room while Robin, Prudence, Will and Flora talk in Pru’s consulting room (Chapter 117). Strike mentally commits to a McDonald’s. A car chases Robin, Strike and Will as they drive away from Pru’s house; bullets are fired at the car, smashing the windscreen and hitting the boot. Robin drives them to safety and Strike calls the police (Chapter 118). Strike and Robin talk to the police in a local station.

Tuesday, 16 August: In the early hours, Strike talks to the police in a local station. Robin sees Will into a police car to be taken back to Pat’s. Robin talks to Ryan on the phone (Chapter 119). Strike and Robin get an Uber to McDonalds on the Strand. They walk to Denmark Street. Strike plans to call Wardle, Layborn, Ekwensi and Murphy later that day (Chapter 120). Strike and Robin stay up talking about the case. Robin gets a taxi home but can’t sleep. She continues her online search for Isaac Mills. Strike calls Ilsa, who agrees to represent Will and Flora. Strike goes to Cedar Terrace to talk to Rosie. Strike talks to Barclay in the office; he wants him to befriend someone. Strike talks to Pat. Robin calls Strike. Pat types up the final report on Toy Boy, who Dev caught with an Eastern European girl (Chapter 122).

Tuesday, 30 August: Strike and Robin attend a meeting in the Flying Horse with Wardle, Layborn, Ekwensi, Murphy, Will, Flora and Ilsa. Robin takes over surveillance on Hampstead from Midge an hour after the end of the meeting (Chapter 123).

Unknown date, possibly Wednesday, 7 September: (second week of September, a “few days” before Saturday). Strike and Robin talk on the phone. Strike tells Robin he’s just seen Becca Pirbright enter the Rupert Court Temple. Robin tells Strike that she’s now on the visitors list for Isaac Mills on Saturday (Chapter 124).

Friday, 9 September: Midge gets photos of Hampstead with a bloke on the heath.

Possibly Saturday, 10 September: Robin visits Isaac Mills in Wandsworth prison (Chapter 124). Robin calls Strike but her phone dies. Robin goes to the office. Strike tells her that the police raided Chapman Farm at six that morning. Shah tells Strike they’re also raiding the Birmingham centre. Strike and Robin watch Sky News in Strike’s flat. Midge is watching Rupert Court. Sam calls to say he’s in. Strike says he’s going to talk to Abigail about Birmingham, Robin says she’s going to talk to Becca (Chapter 125). Robin goes to Wardour Street. Midge is following Becca. Robin gets out her skeleton-keys ready to enter the Rupert Court Temple (Chapter 127). Strike goes to the fire station where Abigail Glover is working and talks to her (Chapter 127). Robin enters the Rupert Court Temple. She hears a baby crying (Chapter 128). Strike talks to Abigail Glover (Chapter 129). Robin finds Mazu Wace in the Rupert Court Temple (Chapter 130). Strike talks to Abigail (Chapter 131). Robin confronts Mazu and Becca (Chapter 132). Daiyu’s killer is revealed. Ryan Murphy arrests them (Chapter 133).

Unknown date, a day before the visit to the Edensors’: Strike and Lucy visit care homes for Ted and have a chat.

A fortnight after the killer is arrested: Strike, Robin and Pat visit Sir Colin Edensor’s house (Chapter 134).
