St Michael’s Mount

St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island on the south coast of Cornwall. When the tide is out, it is reached by a stone path. When the tide is high, the island and castle can only be reached by boat.

According to Cornish folklore, Cormoran the Giant is said to have lived in a cave on the island before the castle was built. The giant is said to have been killed by a farmer’s son called Jack and was named Jack the Giant Killer.

As mentioned in The Silkworm, Cormoran Strike’s mother Leda named him after the 18-foot giant, as he was a very large baby.

On his meeting with Christian Fisher, Strike learns that Fisher had just published a children’s book about British folklore. Wouldn’t it make a sweet moment if Strike read the book to his favourite nephew Jack?
