The injury to his ear is healing which makes him think of the last time he attended a church service with injuries, Robin’s wedding in Masham.

He’s tall enough to witness the coffin being lowered into its grave.

“The churchyard of St Martin’s already had its fair share of SAS graves, all with almost identical headstones of pale stone, engraved with the regiment’s winged dagger badge” (Ch 124)

St Martin’s Church can be found on Ross Road, Hereford and its role as the last resting place for Special Air Service soldiers is due to its proximity to the former SAS home at Bullingham Lane. Due to logistics and traffic congestion the Ministry of Defence applied to have a new cemetery created at Credenhill, but the memorial garden and memorial window remain at the church where former colleagues, family and friends can pay their respects.

It’s an incredibly moving experience to read the names on the white stone markers of the almost 30 soldiers.
