Strike takes the tube to Westbourne Park station and walks to the Quines’ house.

After visiting Leonora at home, Strike heads back towards the tube station in the rain. He notices that he is being followed.

Strike attempts to confront his pursuer, but slips on the wet floor and falls. The bottle of whisky he is carrying escapes its bag and rolls across the floor.
He is helped up by a London Underground employee and manages to catch a southbound train towards Talgarth Road.
