Jiang Wace

Jiang is the youngest son of Jonathan and Mazu Wace. Robin meets Jiang when she arrives at Victoria Station; he is the driver of the minibus taking her to Chapman Farm.  Jiang is a short, heavy set young man with a low forehead, dark eyes, fuzzy dark hair and an underbite.  Robin notices that he has a tic in his right eye which causes it to wink apparently uncontrollably. Jiang raises his hand to try to cover it (Chapter 23).

Robin encounters Jiang again after they arrive at Chapman Farm. Jiang gives Robin and three others the task of dealing with the horses. Robin notices that Jiang has several missing teeth and that his skin is coarse and chapped giving him the appearance of being outside in all weathers (Chapter 26).

Later that day Robin is surprised to see Jiang sitting with the ordinary members of the church whilst Mazu and Jonathan Wace take seats at the top table in the dining hall. Robin notes the similarity of Jiang and Mazu’s narrow dark eyes which makes her suspect that he is Taio Wace’s half brother (Chapter 27).

A few days into her first week Robin is collected by Jiang to see Doctor Zhou and on the way Jiang spots Will Edensor comforting a small child.  Jiang berates Will for this and tells him to get back to his work at the laundry. Jiang explains to Robin about “materialist possession” and how it interferes with spiritual growth. He also tells her that Daiyu was his sister (Chapter 31).

Later in the book Robin finds out more about Jiang and his relationships with the family and other Church members.
