Strike first comes across the as yet unidentified Jamie Kettle as they are both following Wally and MJ from Wally’s flat.  Strike nicknames him “Thurisaz” after the rune symbol he has tattooed on his throat, which gives him away as a member of the Brotherhood of Ultima Thule (ch 41). Thurisaz takes Wally to the Ship & Shovell to meet with (as we find out later) Charlie Peach. Whilst Strike is eavesdropping on their conversation, he trips and falls, drawing attention to himself. Retreating to the men’s toilets, he is followed by Thurisaz and Strike ends up punching him in order to escape (ch 42).

Later, Strike works out Kettle’s real name by going back through Twitter and finding an old account of his with his real picture (ch 46). He tips off Ryan Murphy, and Jamie Kettle is brought in for questioning by the police (ch 48).
