If you didn’t know, all author royalties from The Cuckoo’s Calling go to The Soldiers’ Charity, which is a charity that supports soldiers, veterans and their families. As you know from the books, Cormoran Strike is a veteran and lost half his right leg in Afghanistan when the vehicle he was travelling in blew up around him. J.K. Rowling had said that she has close friends who are veterans, so the subject must be close to her heart.
The charity has recently hosted a photography competition, which shows soldiers at work and also what they do in their spare time, which includes parachuting and ice hockey.
The winning entries of the competition will feature in the 2018 Soldiers’ Charity calendar and were chosen by a panel of leading figures including Tom Burke, who is playing Cormoran Strike in the BBC and HBO adaptation of the books.
