Strike takes the tube to Whitechapel station to meet Shanker, only to find Shanker has cancelled at the last minute.  

He gives Shanker a call and then decides to smoke a cigarette before catching the tube back. However he finds himself ‘heading for the one place in London he had avoided for seventeen years: the building where his mother had died.’ (Chapter 10)

He walks over a metal bridge crossing a railway line. 

He recognises the name of Castlemain Street which he remembers from his A-level year as the street where a school friend had lived.

‘It had been the last of Leda’s squats, two floors of a decrepit building on Fulbourne Street, which was barely a minute from the station.’ (Chapter 10)

‘The buildings were as shabby as he remembered them, white plaster peeling away from the frontages…’ (Chapter 10)

He finds the door to the squat, with its rattling brass letter box, beside a shop selling cheap clothes.
