New Scotland Yard

New Scotland Yard is the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, the police force responsible for the Greater London area.

Strike and Robin have visited New Scotland Yard in previous books. In The Cuckoo’s Calling, Strike is interrogated by Carver after Rochelle Onifade’s body is recovered from the Thames in possession of one of his business cards. In The Silkworm he is questioned after his discovery of Owen Quine’s body. In Career of Evil both Strike and Robin visit to help with Wardle’s enquiries into the identity of a dismembered corpse found in a flat in Shepherd’s Bush; and again, in Lethal White, they both visit to contribute to the investigation of the murder of Jasper Chiswell.

In each of these previous four books, the building they visit is the old headquarters of New Scotland Yard, which was located on Broadway, in Victoria.

Strike met Wardle in The Cuckoo’s Calling and in Career of Evil in The Feathers, a pub just up the road.

In The Ink Black Heart, Strike and Robin meet with Ryan Murphy and Angela Darwish, in order to listen to some surveillance tapes.

“Robin took a taxi to New Scotland Yard, an enormous pale grey building facing the Thames. She found Strike smoking a short distance from the main doors.” (The Ink Black Heart, Chapter 89)

After their meeting, “they headed away from the Thames into the heart of Westminster and finally entered St Stephen’s Tavern, a small, dark Victorian pub which lay directly opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.” (The Ink Black Heart, Chapter 90)

This tells us that the Met have now moved from their old building in Victoria to their new building just off Victoria Embankment in Westminster.  The building used to be called the Curtis Green Building, but was renamed New Scotland Yard when the Met moved in.

Strike and Robin’s visit to New Scotland Yard takes place on 10th June 2015.  However, the move to the new building didn’t actually take place until November 2016, so Robert Galbraith has this taking place at least eighteen months too early to fit with real life events (source).
