Hi you all I'm new here and even if the subject isn't my favorite I would like to read your opinions about him!

For me it started with I could stand him in The cuckoo's calling to disliking him in The silkworm and hating him in Career of evil and with great desire to permanetly get rid of him in Lethal White!

I personally can't bring myself to search for motives for his behavour because I believe there are none! In my opinion he is just like that: ambitious, manipulative, controling and self centered!
I admit he has goals set for his life and wants to achieve them!
1. He wants a good job that will provide him with money, success and a social status!
2. Wants a good looking wife to fit in that social status!
3. Wants all those matterial things to follow this social status!
By wanting all this, Robin's job and money income doesn't fit into his plans and he becomes agressive towards her desicion without being concidered about what she wants and makes her happy!

He is so full of himself and we can see that in many moments during the three books that many fans wonder why he is jealous of Strike if he thinks so highly about himself...
Many might think it's because he is hiding his insecurities by showing such selfconfidence that he actually doesn't has but I doubt it!
( A man who cheated on the woman he claimes that he loves and after that keeps his mistress in his life and even goes with her on double dates doesn't seem to me insecure in any way!)
I believe that he is jealous because of what he did in the past! He is afraid that he might receive what he gave: betrayal! By cheating on Robin he fears that at some point she will do the same thing to him and he will be the deceived one!

I do believe he cares about Robin and she about him but I don't think they are in love with each other anymore! Matthew wants to marry her because she fits in his plans about the life he imagined about himself + he doesn't like to loose and Robin goes on with the wedding because of all the known reasons!
The way he treats Robin shows that he wants all things to go his way and when they don't he becomes insulting towards her, tries to manipulate her in making her feel guilty about something that makes her happy (job, etc) and by chance given he tries to control her life choices in order to achieve his life goals!

That is my opinion about him and I would like to know yours! Wish you a happy Saturday!

So I guess he is beyond redemption and you have nothing to say about him! I really wanted to know what you think about his acctions and character in general and not only chapter after chapter through the books! Sorry for adding the topic!

Oh, don't worry, this forum is just not busy enough. You don't always get replies, it happens to me as well.

I think your topic idea was good though! You just summarized the character of Matthew so perfectly that I didn't have anything to add. I completely agree with your description of Matthew! 🙂

Thank you for your respond! Even though you agree with me I would really like to know if someone disagrees with me or we are all in the same page as far as it concerns Matthew! I've read in other social media some people say they want Matthew redeemed and stay with Robin is there here someone who finds that a good option? Some even prefere him with her just because Cormoran isn't young and handsome as Matthew is! Has anyone detect good qualities in him or are there none? Maybe I dislike hiμ that much that I couldn't see something good in him and for that I decided to write about it!

Haha, I basically agreed with everything you said, couldn't think of anything to add. :p Matthew is the WORST. Honestly, I feel like he could have (maybe) been redeemed after Silkworm... but after the shit he pulled in Career of Evil?? NO WAY.

Also - and people might disagree with me here - I think that Matthew is emotionally abusive, and I think that he's escalating. I'm very worried about what will happen if they stay married in the next book, because abusers often escalate their violence severely after big life milestones (like marriage). I know that it seems unlikely now, but I do think that there is a chance Matthew will eventually become physically abusive as well. Not a certainty, but definitely a possibility.

For me he is beyond redemption as well and sometimes it surprises me to read that people actually want him to stay with Robin!
I agree with you as to Matthew being emotionally abusive but I do hope that we don't get to the point to see him in his worst while being married to Robin! He might as well loose his shit when she decides that she doesn't want to get married or when she asks him for a divorce/anulation of their wedding after she finds out about the voicemail, etc... He could try and make her life difficult in the process of their separation that could work too as a plotline! He could start behaving like crazy and send threatening messages or he could try harm Robin and in the beginning she and Cormoran would think it has something to do with their case and then they find out it's Matthew...
I really don't know why I would be more pissed, if they do actually get married and I have to stand him for another book or maybe more or because I had to wait that long for the fourth book only to read that the wedding did take place after all!
As I said I try to keep my expectations low but sometimes I can't help it and I believe that they won't get married after all or they will break up in the first chapters of Lethal white!

LindMea: Yes, sadly, that's what I fear, too... He's already gone VERY far, and if they do get married and Robin resumes her collaboration with Strike I don't know how he'll react...

Caitlin: I know we disagree on this, but I do see him as deeply insecure - in the way narcissists and abusers often are. I think his brashness, his arrogance and his obsession with "status symbols" (which you described very well) are (maybe unconscious) means of seeking validation.
Of course this doesn't justify his actions in the slightest.

That said, I believe anyone has a chance of redemption... but the thing is, Matt probably doesn't even *think* he needs redemption. So I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I hope he'll disappear from Robin's life as soon as possible.

It's nice to disagree but I don't know if that's true! You believe he is insecure in general and I believe that he is insecure only in one matter and that comes out of fear, fear that Robin will cheat on him at some point as he did to her (with Cormoran probably because they spend much time together as he did with Sarah that time) and he will be the deceived one without knowing it! I believe that he is not insecure in general because he kept the woman he cheated with present in his life and under Robin's nose! I might be wrong but some acctions of his make it hard for me to believe that he is insecure about everything in his life!

I agree completly though and the last two things, Matthew doesn't believe he does anything wrong and so he hasn't a reason to be redeemed!
I do too hope that he will disappear as soon as possible! If it was in my hands Robin wouldn't forgive him and accept to marry him after what he did to her in her most difficult moment!

I totally agree with this. Strike noticed it too, didn't he, when they had dinner in Silkworm - that he had met men like Matthew who were officer class, but always with a 'pocket of insecurity beneath the surface' (I think that was the phrasing, I don't want to go get the book to check lol)

Caitlin I agree with you as well in that he is TOTALLY projecting all over Robin and Strike - cheaters are ALWAYS paranoid that their partners are cheating on them. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he'd cheated other times too, and just not told Robin about it.

Apparently I wouldn't be surprised if Matthew turned out to be literally the devil, lol. I really hate him.

I hate him too and more it pisses me of that he not only cheated on Robin but the excuse he gave for his acctions, like seriously, "YOU, felt lonely?" Did he ever wonder how Robin felt watching her whole life fall apart after what happend to her? How could he watch her in the eyes while knowing what she is going through and he was screwing around? And it was not an one night slip he was sleeping with Sarah for what was it, six months?
In CoE we see that Robin realizes some things about him and his behavior and still out of fear and for the sake of safity she goes on with marrying him and even if I understand her reasons I was angry at her for some time! But I hated him more while crying during the royal wedding ceremony I sooo didn't buy it that he got emotional!
As for Matthew cheating on Robin not only with Sarah I don't find it impossible and more after his behavior around the waitress or he might as well get it on with Sarah sometimes when he is unsatisfied with Robin's behavior or choices!
I really, really don't know what I'm gonna do with myself if they get married and he stays around more than a few chapters in Lethal white!

wooow you have a good memory! But eighteen months that's even worse!!! I hope JKR doesn't make him stay around for much longer! Robin should know about her phone as soon as possible, tell him to get lost and then he can go on crazy mode as much as he wants with Cormoran around he can't do much of damage!

Guys i really really agree with you, i hate Matthew as well. I already said in one topic, if Robin and him stay together in Lethal White i will get really disappointed, i think the book won't gonna work with this marriage, and you described it very well kkk
I agree that he's insecure and that Sarah wasn't the only time he betrayed Robin as well😠
For me Matthew isn't man for Robin and i would love to see her saying it to him, she needs to realise this!

I think that Robin realized it at some point that he isn't right for her but even though she acted on that she couldn't get through with it! She cares for him and with his ugly cry during the royal wedding he made her come around and go on with the wedding! They are to many years together and she feels safe in her relationship with him because of familiarity! To be honest at some point I felt disappointed because I thought that if she could get over the fact that he cheated on her there is nothing that he could do for them to break up for good but then Matthew messed up with her phone and I really hope when Robin finds out it will be the moment when she puts an end to her relationship with Matthew if she doensn't leave him even then I will lose all hope! After the long wait for the fourth book I wish JKR will do something nice for us and doesn't let Robin marry Matthew or at least she breaks them up in the first chapters!

Sorry I've only just seen this topic! I think we're trying to fix it so site members receive notifications for replies, etc.. This topic is great! Thanks for posting and thanks for the interesting discussion!
What you've said I agree with. I started off being able to tolerate Matthew in book 1, to hating him in book 2, to wanting him dead in book 3!
Cormoran said (I think it was in chapter 40?) that, to Robin, Matthew is "the safe boy from home", like you said Caitlin, he is familiarity to her. Someone who was somewhat of a support to her in those difficult times. Since she's found out what he's done I think that incentive has been blown away. Even in book two she starts seeing Matthew through Strike's perspective, and I think Matthew actually started to embarrass her. I think the reason she wanted Strike and Matthew to meet so much was for Robin to get Strike's approval of Matthew, not the other way around. I think this might have been touched upon in The Silkworm.
Everything about the character's thoughts and relationships is quite subtle. These are not books for people who want a pure thrilling murder mystery. It's the characters that make it for me.
You might find it very strange me saying this, but I kind of want Matthew and Robin to get married. Not because I don't care for Robin, but purely because J.K. Rowling has said as long as she can keep the relationship between characters interesting, there could easily be more than 10 books. And I think them getting married would draw out the drama even longer. Perhaps there will be all the drama with the divorce, which could last a book or two. But ultimately, of course, Matthew needs to go. Preferably by being brutally murdered. 😛

Thanks again for this topic! I love it!

Haha, you know, I've resigned myself to Robin and Matthew being married in LW, since I'm pretty sure that's where Rowling is taking this - but I've been very upset about it! But now, thinking about what you said, I think I can agree with you - there WOULD be lots of drama and conflict, and I do LOVE to HATE Matthew. If he's gone too quickly, who am I going to hate??

Although I don't want him to be murdered, because Robin could easily forget all of his horrible character flaws and eventually remember him fondly... I want Robin to eventually come to her senses and dump his ass.

Thank you for your so kind words! I really wanted to know how other fans feel about Matthew because every reader has different perspective of things and characters! I'm also very happy that another member here introduced me to this page and I can participate in discussions about the plot and characters of the serie while waiting for the fourth book!
I agree with you that what makes the books different and more interesting are the personal lifes of the main characters that add to the plot of the case in every book!
As for Robin marrying Matthew I'm sorry but I can't agree with you because it would be one of the same, what I mean by this is that we already know their problems and for me it would be boring to read once again that he doesn't like her job, that he underestiamtes her, that he is jealous of Cormoran because of his infidelity and fear that Robin might do this to him and now we will have another two things to the equetion and that's from Robin's side, he cheating on her and him messing with her phone!
They can get married but she must send him on his way in the first two chapters in which I hope she realize what he did with her phone! I wan't them apart, Matthew can cause problems to her while waiting for the marriage anulation or their divorce (I don't know how things can be resolved) he might snap after her rejection that would be also very interesting but Robin must stay single in book four until the end of book five in order to discover who she is without Matthew around and doing things she really loves without being judged by anyone!
I would hate it if they stay married, and live together for another two books with the same drama as in the previous three books!

I agree with you Caitlin! I don't need this repeated drama. I would love to watch Robin focus on her independence. And i agree with what you said before, that she came back with him because of familiarity, but she don't like him any more. And for me there's some parts in book 3 that talks about Matthew in a scornful way, reflecting Robin's feelings about him, for example, when before the marriage she knows he want Robin use his name, that he can't wait her to become "Mrs Cunliffe". Yes, i think she is on the way to leave him.

Pamela, clearly Robin doesn't feel the same about Matthew and I think she isn't going to tolerate any mistakes by him anymore but I don't know if JKR will break them up in order to cause more drama but if Robin will be married I don't know how she can develope the feelings between her and Cormoran, I'm sure I don't want Robin to be unfaithful to Matthew (I don't like him) but I don't want him to be right about Robin cheating on him with Cormoran! I also am sure that I'm going to be bored if in their married life they continue to have the same problems, we already know and to add some more into it isn't going to help the whole drama thing! I'm also pretty sure I'm gonna be mad at Robin if she finds out about what he did with her phone and doesn't send him on his way! At some point I could understand why she went on with the marriage but from now on I expect more from her!

Well, ya' all I think you got a handle on the Matthew thing. I personally think he has deep seeded character issues and I wonder what his family is like. I know Robin really doesn't like his family very much. The thing that I see is Robin is growing and realizing the Matt is not the man she thought he was. The relationship is based on a fantasy, a dream. I think when they broke up, it was on the condition he not interfere with her job choice again. When she finds out about the phone calls and deleting Strike. I think she is going to go ballistic. I could see her walking out on him at the wedding and leaving with Strike.

I don't really feel sorry for Matt. I think a good dose of consequences is heading his way, which I feel he deserves.
